Navajo EMS Field Operations, Documentation & Transport Law

This self-paced activity is designed for Navajo EMS Paramedics and focuses on medical/legal decision-making, documentation, patient rights, refusals, consent, transport decisions, and professional accountability in the prehospital environment. This course emphasizes practical judgment, defensible decision-making, and the importance of clear communication when managing complex patient care situations. Participants will review key medical/legal concepts including duty to act, standard of care, scope of practice, negligence, abandonment, consent, implied consent, informed refusal, patient capacity, confidentiality, and documentation expectations. Special attention is placed on rural EMS challenges, extended transport times, limited resources, law enforcement involvement, high-risk refusals, and situations where clinical decisions may later be reviewed by supervisors, medical directors, hospitals, attorneys, or regulatory agencies. The session also reinforces the importance of writing accurate, complete, and objective patient care reports. Participants will explore how strong documentation supports continuity of care, protects the provider, and demonstrates sound clinical reasoning. Case-based scenarios will help paramedics apply medical/legal principles to real-world EMS calls involving refusals, altered mental status, intoxication, trauma, behavioral emergencies, pediatric patients, and high-risk transport decisions. After completing this activity, the participant will be able to: Identify key medical/legal responsibilities of the paramedic. By the end of this self‑paced session, you'll be able to adapt your airway management plan on the fly, document interventions clearly, and understand the importance of ongoing reassessment during long transport times common in rural Navajo Nation EMS.
