Navajo EMS Chemical Restraint and Psychiatric Emergencies

26-GRMT-F3-0044 This self-paced activity is designed for advanced EMS providers and focuses on the safe assessment and management of patients requiring chemical or physical restraint. Using case-based discussion, participants will review scene safety, recognition of severe agitation, medical and behavioral assessment, verbal de-escalation, indications for restraint, medication administration, continuous monitoring, reassessment, medical-control consultation, documentation, and transport decisions while protecting patients, responders, and bystanders. Topics include severe agitation, aggression, psychosis, suicidal behavior, intoxication, withdrawal, stimulant exposure, overdose, head injury, hypoxia, hypoglycemia, delirium, and other medical causes of abnormal behavior. Additional content includes law-enforcement coordination, team-based restraint application, safe positioning, prevention of positional asphyxia, circulation and airway checks, benzodiazepines, antipsychotics, dissociative medications, dosing considerations, adverse reactions, airway and ventilatory support, oxygen, suction, capnography, cardiac monitoring, glucose assessment, vascular access, temperature management, and communication with receiving facilities. Learning Objectives At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: Identify patients requiring immediate intervention for severe agitation, aggression, or unsafe behavior Differentiate psychiatric causes from medical, traumatic, toxicologic, and substance-related emergencies Recognize respiratory compromise, positional asphyxia, medication reactions, and other signs of deterioration Apply appropriate chemical and physical restraint, monitoring, reassessment, documentation, and transport practices Completion Requirements • Complete the full course • Pass the post-test with a score of 80% or higher • Complete the course evaluation Certificate Information: CAPCE credit
