Navajo EMS OB & Neonatal Emergencies Basics

CAPCE ID: 26-GRMT-F3-0028 This self-paced activity is designed for EMS providers and focuses on obstetric emergencies commonly encountered at the EMT level. Using case-based discussion and prehospital OB response examples, participants will review assessment, supportive care, delivery preparation, postpartum care, neonatal care, and early recognition of complications in the field. Topics include EMT assessment of the pregnant patient, normal pregnancy changes, signs of active labor, determining whether delivery is imminent, preparing for field delivery, assisting with normal childbirth, newborn assessment, neonatal warming and stimulation, suctioning considerations, APGAR scoring, postpartum care, placental delivery, vaginal bleeding, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy concerns, preeclampsia/eclampsia recognition, supine hypotensive syndrome, breech delivery awareness, prolapsed cord, limb presentation, shoulder dystocia awareness, and when to request ALS or rapid transport. The activity emphasizes calm scene management, patient privacy and dignity, early communication with medical control and the receiving facility, and recognition of high-risk findings that require immediate transport. Learning Objectives At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to: • Identify common obstetric emergencies and high-risk findings encountered by EMTs • Explain how to assess a pregnant patient and determine whether delivery is imminent • Describe the EMT role in assisting with normal childbirth and immediate newborn care • Recognize complications such as postpartum hemorrhage, preeclampsia/eclampsia, prolapsed cord, breech presentation, and miscarriage • Communicate maternal status, labor findings, newborn condition, complications, and transport priorities using clear radio reports Completion Requirements • Complete the full course • Pass the post-test with a score of 80% or higher • Complete the course evaluation Certificate Information: CAPCE credit
